WEB DESIGN BASICS--LESS IS MORE

"Less is More."
--20th Century architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.

If Mies van der Rohe were a Web designer in 2000, he might have made
famous a different quotation:

"Enough with the More already! Try some Less for a change!"

Not as elegant, but much more emphatic. Mies van der Rohe and others
would warn you against the temptation to incorporate a feature into a
Web page just because you can. (And there are plenty of features you
CAN incorporate.)

Just as a Web designer might have a compelling idea that must wait for
the proper project, so a designer must use patience and restraint in
employing a new piece of technology. Use extra caution when trying a
new gadget for the very first time: it may not only be uncalled for,
it might be incorrectly employed in the designer's rush to be the
first on the block to use it. Not to mention that you'll shoot
yourself in the virtual foot if you employ technologies that the end
user hasn't yet adopted.
